Imagine a life science company publishing an ESG report that highlights its commitments to inclusion, accountability, and stakeholder engagement. The report features polished photography, colorful charts, and detailed performance data.
One potential investor, Maya, has low vision. She wants to evaluate the company’s progress toward its greenhouse gas emissions targets before recommending it to her firm. She enlarges the digital report, but the fixed layout forces her to scroll horizontally across each page. The chart labels become difficult to follow, and the report relies on subtle color differences that she cannot distinguish easily. When she turns to her screen reader for help, it cannot interpret the chart or connect the data with the explanatory footnotes.
The information is technically available. For Maya, it is not meaningfully accessible.
Her experience illustrates a contradiction at the heart of some ESG reporting: a report can promote inclusion and transparency while creating barriers that prevent some stakeholders from examining the company’s performance.
This issue affects a substantial share of any organization’s audience. More than 1 in 4 U.S. adults have some type of disability, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Approximately 5.5% have blindness or serious difficulty seeing, even when wearing glasses.
Investors, employees, customers, suppliers, regulators, and community members may encounter similar barriers. Two important dimensions of an accessible sustainability report are:
- Technical accessibility: People and assistive technologies can access and navigate the report.
- Readability and cognitive accessibility: Readers can find, process, and understand the information.
This blog will explain what ESG report accessibility means, identify common barriers in ESG reports, review relevant accessibility standards and sustainability-reporting requirements, and outline ways organizations can improve and test their reports.

What Does ESG Report Accessibility Mean?
Accessibility considers the needs of people with visual, auditory, physical, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities. It also improves the experience for people reading on mobile devices, working in distracting environments, or trying to understand unfamiliar ESG terminology.
A report is not necessarily accessible because it can be downloaded, looks clean, or opens in a screen reader. Passing an automated accessibility check does not guarantee that a person can use it effectively.
It helps to distinguish three related concepts:
- Availability: The report can be located and opened.
- Technical accessibility: Its structure and functions work with assistive technologies and different navigation methods.
- Readability and cognitive accessibility: Readers can locate, process, and understand the content.
ESG report readability is one part of accessibility. Plain language, meaningful headings, concise sections, and predictable navigation reduce the effort required to process complex disclosures. But clear writing cannot compensate for low-contrast color schemes, missing image descriptions, or a website that requires a mouse. Both the content and its underlying structure matter, and visually polished reports can still contain significant barriers.
Why Attractive ESG Reports Can Fail on Accessibility
Visual polish can hide structural barriers. Even professionally designed reports may include:
- Low-contrast brand colors
- Tiny footnotes or chart labels
- Text embedded in images
- Charts that rely entirely on color
- Headings that lack structural tags
- Unhelpful automatically generated alternative text
- Multicolumn pages with scrambled reading order
- Tables used to control the page layout
- Vague links such as “read more”
- Interactive tools that require a mouse
- A PDF that has not been properly structured and tested, with no accessible alternative available
These problems often emerge when accessibility is treated as a final design check. A report may look professional and may even pass an automated test while still frustrating the people trying to use it. Established criteria provide a framework for identifying and preventing many of these barriers.

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 in Plain Language
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) provide an international framework for making digital content accessible. Developed through the World Wide Web Consortium, WCAG 2.2 is the latest version of WCAG 2 and the version the group recommends using. It organizes 13 guidelines under four principles:
- Perceivable: People can receive the information in a form they can perceive.
- Operable: People can navigate and interact with the content.
- Understandable: The information and interface are clear and predictable.
- Robust: The content works reliably with browsers and assistive technologies.
WCAG has three conformance levels:
- Level A covers foundational requirements.
- Level AA addresses many common and consequential barriers.
- Level AAA is the highest and most demanding level, but it may not be achievable for every type of content.
For ESG websites and report microsites, WCAG 2.2 Level AA is a widely used accessibility target. This version added criteria related to visible keyboard focus, dragging movements, target sizes, consistent help, repeated data entry, and accessible authentication.
For websites and report microsites, WCAG conformance requires evaluation against testable success criteria. Many WCAG principles and criteria can also be applied to downloadable documents such as PDFs, although the World Wide Web Consortium provides separate guidance for interpreting them in non-web formats. In either case, reviewing appearance or completing a checklist is not enough to confirm accessibility.
Where WCAG, CSRD, and ESRS Intersect
WCAG and European sustainability-reporting requirements address different aspects of digital disclosure. WCAG focuses on readers’ ability to perceive, operate, and understand digital content. In the European Union, companies within the scope of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) must prepare sustainability disclosures using the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). These requirements address what organizations disclose and the quality and presentation of that information.
The ESRS call for sustainability information to be clear, concise, and understandable. The CSRD also anticipates digitally tagged sustainability reporting. The European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG) has developed an XBRL taxonomy that could allow disclosed information to be tagged and processed in a structured format. The taxonomy has been submitted to European authorities as a basis for future tagging rules.
Machine-readable information is not automatically accessible to humans. Data can be correctly tagged for software yet remain difficult for a person to navigate, perceive, or interpret. Likewise, a WCAG-compliant sustainability report is not necessarily compliant with CSRD or ESRS requirements. Addressing both sets of criteria requires early coordination among sustainability, legal, content, design, development, and accessibility teams.

ESG Report Accessibility Checklists and Tests
The checklists provided here can help teams begin to identify accessibility requirements for reports, PDFs, websites, and data visualizations. Testing is important to confirm that the content is accessible. A reliable evaluation should combine automated, manual, and user testing.
- Run automated checks. Use the accessibility checker in the source application and test the final PDF in Adobe Acrobat or another PDF accessibility tool. WAVE, Axe, and Lighthouse can identify many issues on websites and microsites. A separate contrast checker can evaluate color combinations.
- Perform manual tests. Navigate without a mouse. Review heading structure, link text, and reading order. Enlarge the content, review it in grayscale to identify meaning conveyed through color alone, use a contrast checker for applicable color combinations, and confirm that tables and charts have useful text alternatives.
- Test representative tasks with appropriate assistive technology and users. Tasks such as finding a specific disclosure, navigating between sections, following links, and interpreting a chart or table can be useful accessibility tests. Screen readers may include NVDA, JAWS, or VoiceOver. Include people with disabilities in usability testing when feasible. Complex or high-stakes reports may also warrant a specialist audit.
Automated tools can flag issues such as an absent tag structure or certain contrast failures. They cannot reliably determine whether the tags are correct, alternative text is meaningful, the reading sequence makes sense, or a disclosure is genuinely understandable.

ESG Report Accessibility Is Also a Credibility Issue
Stakeholders assess ESG credibility partly through the quality of the disclosure itself. An inaccessible report can undermine stated commitments to inclusion, equity, employee well-being, and stakeholder engagement.
Accessibility also affects scrutiny. Buried qualifications, inaccessible charts, and confusing navigation make it harder to evaluate an organization’s evidence. A stakeholder may struggle to compare goals with results, understand the methodology behind a claim, or locate an explanation for a missed target.
Accessibility problems do not prove greenwashing. They can, however, intensify skepticism when favorable claims receive prominent treatment while limitations, uncertainties, or unfavorable results remain difficult to find and interpret.
An accessible report allows readers to examine the full record: progress, setbacks, assumptions, methods, and future commitments. That openness supports trust because it gives stakeholders the information they need to reach their own conclusions. Publishing data is only the first step. Credibility comes from making it available for meaningful examination.
Make Accessibility Part of the Process
Accessibility works best when it shapes content strategy, writing, information architecture, design, and development. Writers, designers, developers, ESG specialists, and reviewers all have a role to play.
Building accessibility into both brand guidelines and ESG report design reduces the cost and complexity of last-minute remediation. More importantly, it produces communications that support transparency and build credibility.
